Jamaica has always had a reputation as a Stoner's Paradise, however in reality Cannabis was illegal until 2015. If you were caught would have to deal with the Jamaican court system… definitely not a vacation highlight
Due to de-criminalization and legalizing medical marijuana, and the Rastafarian Church, Jamaica is on course to take its rightful place as a premier 420 tourist destination. Elevated Jamaican retreats offer our guests a glimpse into the world of the Jamaican ganja culture, the cultivation process, and become part of the local cannabis community
YA MON!! Smoking ganja is legal in Jamaica!!
You can buy weed legally at any of the herb houses – the local name for dispensaries – that are popping up all over the island. You are eligible to purchase with a valid state medical marijuana card from the US. If you are from an adult-use or state still under prohibition just tell the herb house budtender that you intend to use your ganja for a “therapeutic purpose”. So, although ganja is technically legal only for medical purposes, any adult over 18 can purchase it. Here are a couple of things to know:
- It is legal to possess up to two ounces (57g)
- Smoking ganja in public is prohibited and carries a fine of J$500 (about US$3). Like (say) a parking ticket, this fine is an administrative matter and does not result in a criminal record.
I prefer to obtain my herb is from the Rastafarian Sacramental Church. The Rastafi provide the "Holy Herb" in exchange for a donation to the church. The ganja is regulated, however, it is all locally grown on small farms. Generally the quality is dope and will get you lit!! Oh and the prices are WAY better than at the medical dispensary.
IT’S NO SECRET that Jamaica is the best island to experience reggae, Jerk chicken, and beautiful beaches. For me, though, the amazing scenery is only a backdrop to experiencing the world famous cannabis.
Serious ganja enthusiasts may just want to chill by the pool or on the beach with a spliff in hand - perhaps, with the occasional diversion of a farm tour or reggae night. Others may be exclusively focused on a health and wellness regimen. You may be thinking about a “roots” ganja vacation close to the smells, tastes and people of Jamaica.
